Project Scope
Project was undertaken for Genesis Engineering on behalf of Oktedi Mine Limited
Oktedi Mine Limited (OTML) in Tabubil PNG, uses the 157km National Highway as a Haul Road in conjunction with public traffic. OTML are responsible for the safety of the highway, which is predominantly gravel on embankments.
Some of these embankments have elevations in excess of 60m, and currently have no guard rail. The highway has been the location of a number of casualties and fatalities.
OTML in meeting their Road Safety Policy, commissioned TEG Consulting through Genesis Engineering to undertake a Road Safety Audit and to provide a road barrier system design at high risk locations to be constructed as part of a national road safety program.
The design of the Road Barrier Design system involved:
- Using client survey data of the road to develop long section profiles and cross sections, to be used in conjunction with field road safety audit. To identify high risk locations.
- Using Australian Austroads Road & Safety Barrier Design guidelines, develop a contingent of barrier systems to be utilised at high risk locations.
- Preparation of Road Safety Barrier report, noting the requirements for compliance to Austroads Part 6b and making recommendations for addressing risk issues from the road safety audit.
- Document the entire length of the Haul Road to enable construction of barriers to commence.
Our Involvement
TEG Consulting Engineers was responsible for the Road Barrier requirements report to achieve compliance with Austroads and the final design and documentation for the Road Safety Barrier design details and layout.
TEG Consulting also prepared the civil model in C3D, with CSD to provide road profiles and cross sections.
Project Challenges
The engineering design and documentation scope posed a number of challenges:
- Errors in survey data provided by OTML, meant that the civil model required extensive correction for it to be representative of what the Haul Road is. This involved forensic assessment of survey points and corrections to survey data.
- The scale of the project being so large meant that the full length was broken down into 10km allotments to enable modelling in reasonable time.
- Limited survey data beyond the road edge meant that field survey notes gathered from site were critical in establishing locations of high risk areas and offset from road centre alignment line.
- In some cases, to optimise the safety barrier treatments, the provided road alignment was adjusted to create compliant clear zones.
Project Outcomes
TEG Consulting Engineers completed all scope requirements and issued to OTML for construction.
